How To Configure and Backup to an SFTP Server
Table of Contents
ToggleINTRODUCTION
SFTP, which stands for SSH File Transfer Protocol, or Secure File Transfer Protocol, is a protocol packaged with SSH that is a popular method of secure file transfer between two remote systems.
This guide will show you how to configure a Mac as an SFTP Server and then connect and access it using InterConneX.
Note: Although this guide is about setting up and accessing an SFTP server, we think if you are communicating with a Mac, ChronoAgent is a much better option than SFTP.
HOW TO CONFIGURE A MAC AS AN SFTP SERVER
- In System Preferences open the “Sharing” panel.
- Click on the “Remote Login” service entry. You may have to unlock the panel first.
- Configure the “Allow access for” section to your desired access method.
- ‘Check’ the box to turn on the “Remote Login” service.
Once you have access to a SFTP server, you can configure InterConneX to connect to it.
CREATE SHARESPACE IN INTERCONNEX
Now that you have your other Mac as a SFTP server, you can move over to InterConneX and create your sharespace so you can begin accessing the server. Follow the steps below to set up a server sharespace.
- Tap on the ‘+’ to add a new sharespace.
- Choose ‘SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol).’
- Tap on ‘Next.’
- If you have set up a Mac as your SFTP server, and it is on the same network, then its computer name should automatically show up in the “Available SFTP Servers” section as a separate entry. In which case, simply select that entry, which we have done. Otherwise, you’ll need to manually connect by choosing “Internet Address” and then specifying the URL or IP address of your SFTP server.
- Tap on ‘Next.’
- Supply the name and password for an authorized user on your SFTP server.
- ‘Test’ these login settings to verify the credentials work.
- Tap on ‘Next.’
- If you wish to have the connection connect automatically, tap on the ‘Auto Connect’ setting.
- Tap on ‘Next.’
- Provide a unique sharespace name.
- Tap on ‘Next.’
- Review all settings and make any necessary changes.
- Tap on ‘Save’ if everything looks good.
- That’s it! Now you’re connected to your SFTP Server. You can view all the files on your SFTP Server within your newly created sharespace!
